In reply to Your Lordship's Des-
-patch No. 202 of the 4th. ultimo, I have the honour to
transmit copies of the correspondence between Messrs.
Jardine, Matheson and Company, the Agents of Nobel's
Explosives Company, Limited, and the Colonial Secretary.

As long ago as the 11th. July,
ed
1887, the General Officer Commanding forwarding to the
Colonial Government a memorandum from the Commanding Royal
Engineer urging that the site for a Magazine to be given to
Nobel's Explosives Company should be within the Harbour
Defences. At that date, however, the Government could not
arrange for the storage of the explosives in a Government
Depôt and the lease for One Tree Island was accordingly
granted in 1887 at an annual rental of $100.

In 1898 the lease was renewed for
10 years at an annual rental of $600 and this lease expires
